High Quality Family-Raised Myotonic "Fainting" Goats
Welcome to Secret Call Ranch! We are a small family owned ranch specializing in the breeding of Myotonic "Fainting" Goats, as well as caring for an array of other pets. We are located on the beautiful West Coast of Southern California, just southeast of the charming community of Ramona, in an area known as Barona Mesa. Only 36 miles northeast of central San Diego in the foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains, we are at an elevation of 1900 ft.
Every one of our goats is hand raised on our small family owned ranch. Each Buck and Doe are registered and carefully chosen as a great representation of the breed. We take pride in our friendly high quality Fainting Goats, our goal is to breed healthy and happy pets for breeding stock, showing and most of all as companion animals. Goats are herd animals; therefore they should never live alone.
This is a unique breed of domestic goats, whose muscles freeze giving them their so called "fainting" abilities. This characteristic is caused by a hereditary genetic disorder known as myotonia congenita. Though painless, when overly excited or startled this generally results in the animal stiffening and/or collapsing onto its side for a duration of a few moments.
Slightly smaller than the standard breed of goats, Fainting Goats are generally 17-25 inches tall at the withers and can weigh from 60-170 pounds. However, Bucks can get as heavy as 200 pounds. Their hair can be short or long, with some producing a great deal of cashmere during colder months. Common colors are black and white however, most possible coat colors are found in this breed.
Fainting Goats have many other names such as Myotonic Goats, Tennessee (Meat) Goats, Stiff-legged Goats, Wooden-leg Goats and Tennessee Scare Goats. They are smaller in size, resulting in them being easier to care for and maintain, making them more desirable for smaller farms and ranches. Classified as a meat goat as opposed to a dairy goat, it can be raised for chevon (goat meat). Being that this breed is listed as threatened by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy it is not used as often as other breeds for this purpose. Its rarity makes the live goat more valuable!
At Secret Call Ranch we hope to produce only the best of quality and health in our Fainting Goats, while acquiring a great reputation and future referrals. Thank you for visiting our site and please check back frequently for future breeding and available Kids! ;)
